Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny D. Anthony today received a condolence call from his
Grenadian counterpart expressing sympathy over the death of National Calypso
Monarch, Jany Williams.
Prime Minister Anthony received a call Thursday morning from Prime Minister Dr.
Keith Mitchell, in which the Grenadian leader expressed sorrow over the death of
Jany in a fatal accident last Sunday.
Prime Minister Mitchell said Jany was “a wonderful and creative expression of
Caribbean talent and spirit. We are very saddened by her death.”
He said he wished to acknowledge, on behalf of Grenadians, “the efforts by Jany
to raise solidarity and support for Grenada through a special concert she
planned for later this month.”
Dr. Mitchell thanked the St. Lucia Government for supporting Jany’s initiative
and expressed pleasure “that it will go ahead as planned, despite Jany’s
unexpected absence.”
He said the “Government and People of Grenada will have a representative at
Jany’s funeral,” which will take place in the village of Laborie, from whence
she came.
Jany’s untimely death has reverberated across the Caribbean, given the
popularity of the Caribbean Vizion band that she had become a prime spokesperson
for.
The band, five of whose members were with Jany when the accident occurred,
comprises members from various Caribbean nations.
