Monday, October 18, 2004 - Artisans from Choiseul, the craft mecca of
Saint Lucia, will this week, form the highlight of an exhibition hosted by the
Folk Research Centre (FRC). The exhibition will run from the 18th to the 22nd of
October, under the theme, “Traditional Technology Week”.
The activity is one of several organised by the FRC to showcase local talent and
culture throughout Creole Heritage Month. The five-day event organised in
collaboration with HERITAS, an organisation responsible for heritage tourism
development, will highlight the work of skilled craft artisans from the Choiseul
Association of Tourism Craft and Heritage.
Executive Director of FRC, Robert Lee said that the artisans would be ready to
share their expertise with interested persons: “We’re going to have a number of
crafts people from around the island principally, from Choiseul, and right here
on the floor of FRC they will be involved in straw making, pottery, those sort
of things; they will be doing their stuff here, and we will be inviting schools
to come and see what the artisans are doing, and talk with them to understand
what it takes to do that kind of work”, Mr. Lee said, adding, “we are also
hoping to have tents outside the building so that on certain days people can
sell their work, because as we promote this publicly visitors might want to
come”.
On Wednesday the FRC will be hosting a ‘La Magwit’ lunch in honour of the La
Marguerite Flower Festival, which was celebrated on the 17th of October.
Several other activities carded for next week will be publicized during a
subsequent programme. The activities will culminate with the hosting of Jounen
Kweyol in the communities of Mon Repos, Babonneau, Anse La Raye and Belle Vue in
Vieux Fort.
