HBN, GENEVA, Switzerland, Thursday, Oct. 28 - Responding to a World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling for a change in its system of quotas and duties, the European Union (EU) yesterday, proposed a new banana duty of US$290 per ton, beginning in 2006.

The move, EU officials say, will hopefully help Caribbean and other banana producers in African, Caribbean and Pacific grouping from losing to growers in Ecuador and other Latin American countries.

But Arnhim Eustace, former chairman of the Windward Islands Banana Development and Exporting Company, told the BBC Caribbean, the duty has to be higher to protect the region from external market forces.

He said a duty of US$349-381 would be better and serve to help the struggling sector survive.
