The business of standardisation is not an easy task, or one in which the
rewards come easily. It involves long hours, multiple projects, extensive
research, many meetings, a long wait for results and a chronic shortage of time,
money and people. It is this with this recognition that the St. Lucia Bureau of
Standards has planned a special ceremony to honor persons and local
organizations, for volunteering time and expertise to the Bureau’s 14 standards
development technical committees.
The Technical Committee Recognition Ceremony and Symposium is one of many
activities in observance of Standards Week 2004. Scheduled for October 13 at the
Bay Gardens Hotel, this activity is intended to strengthen the effectiveness of
and participation in the national standards development process. The Bureau’s
Technical Committee Awards Programme will also be launched at that activity.
Winsome Decarish of the Bureau of Standards in Jamaica will be the guest speaker
at the activity. Ms. Decarish has a wealth of experience in coordinating
national standards development activities, as well as much exposure with the
international standards development process. The guest speaker was selected on
the basis of the tremendous amount work that Jamaica has done with respect to
regional standards development, in addition to the fact that the Jamaica Bureau
of Standards is the first and only Standards Body in the CARICOM region to host
one of the technical committees of the International Organisation for
Standardization (ISO).
Technical committees operate under the auspices of the SLBS and are the drivers
of the national standards development process. They comprise experts from a
range of sectors, industries, and consumer groups. To date, the work of the SLBS’
14 technical committees has resulted in the adoption of eighty ones national
standards, ranging from labeling, food products, quality management, consumer
goods, tourism and other services.
