Tuesday, November 30, 2004 - The St. Lucia Solid Waste Management
Authority on November 23 and 25, 2004, conducted a two-day biomedical waste
management training workshop for the staff of the St. Jude's Hospital.
The purpose of the training exercise was to educate staff in proper biomedical
waste management and prepare them for the biomedical waste management collection
service to be offered from January 1, 2005.
From January 1, 2005, biomedical waste will be collected from all government
health care establishments and transported to the biomedical waste management
treatment facility, where it will be treated before disposal at the Deglos
Sanitary Landfill.
It is envisaged that private medical facilities will be brought on board at a
later date.
The training sessions focused on waste segregation, safe handling,
transportation, storage and treatment of biomedical waste.
The sessions are expected to develop the capacity of the staff of the hospital
to adequately manage this hazardous waste stream.
