Monday, November 1, 2004 - The increasingly friendly ties between St. Lucia and China will get a big boost later this week, with the launching of the St. Lucia-China Friendship Association on Friday evening, November 5, at the National Insurance Corporation’s (NIC) Conference Centre.

A wide cross section of people, including members of the Chinese community here, as well as persons doing business with China, have been invited to the launching ceremony of the new Association, which was launched on September 27 last at the same venue.

The evening’s programme will include addresses, an exhibition of photos, posters, literature and products from China and special video displays. There will also be a special performance of demonstrations the Oriental arts of Tai Chi and Wushu by members of the local Wushu-Tai Chi Federation.

A special video presentation of the recent visit to China by Her Excellency the Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy, will also be shown, courtesy the Government Information Service (GIS).

The evening’s programme will also include the launching of a book by St. Lucian journalist Earl Bousquet, entitled “Ten Days Behind The Great Wall”.
Bousquet, who is also the President of the St. Lucia Association, wrote the book during a tour of China by a group of 21 Caribbean journalists who visited three Chinese cities (Beijing, Xiamen and Shanghai) in September last year.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to St. Lucia, Mr. Gu Huamin, Bousquet and Vice President of the Association Mr Velon John, are also down to deliver addresses.

The St. Lucia-China Association was established to foster closer relations, through culture, between the ordinary peoples of the two nations. So far, over 120 persons have signed application forms to become members of the Association.

Members of the Executive of the Association are: Earl Bousquet (President), Velon John (Vice President), Michelle Charles (Secretary), Lucy Alexander (Assistant Secretary), Victor Eudoxie (Treasurer), David Vitalis (Public Relations Officer).
