Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - The National Emergency Management
Organization (NEMO) wants to draw the attention of the public to the weather
condition over the past few days.
NEMO’s Deputy Director, Mr. Michael Dubois said that the public needed to be
reminded of its responsibility in averting possible danger to life and property.
The heavy rains experienced recently resulted in fallen trees, land slippage and
flooding in some areas.
“Other than the swollen rivers and so on, we have not gotten any reports of any
major difficulties suffered by persons, but we want to take this opportunity to
implore residents and citizens to take heed and be cautious about venturing into
flooded areas, and take precautionary measures against flooding in itself”, Mr.
Dubois said.
According to Mr. Dubois, the improper disposal of garbage has resulted in some
cases in clogged drains, thereby contributing to the problem of flooding.
NEMO, he said, is continuing to work with the Solid Waste Management Authority
in implementing additional mechanisms for debris management. However, he added
that the business community and the wider public must appreciate the need for
proper disposal of garbage.
