Wednesday, November 24, 2004 - Members of the public have been given the
assurance that the ongoing works to demolish the Hose Tower of the Saint Lucia
Fire and Emergency Services will not interrupt the normal operations of the
institution.
Divisional Officer and PRO and Mr. Hilton Occulien said that the entire project
was being undertaken in a manner that would limit inconveniences to officers in
the performance of their duties: “Because of the business of that area, the
contractors are working only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday… only weekends. They
have said it will last about a month… four weeks to six weeks, because of the
weekend component of the process”.
Explaining further, Mr. Occulien said, “The emergency services are to the east
of the building;, it’s only the admin section and canteen that would be
adversely affected had they been working during the week, but the are working
only on weekends therefore, all processes are still ongoing at the station”.
Mr. Occulien says the tower was originally used to hang canvas hoses up for
drying. He added that with the introduction of synthetic hoses several years
ago, this practice is now outdated.
The Hose Tower, which characterised the appearance of the building since 1948,
will not be replaced. Meanwhile, another project for the service is said to be
in the pipeline to replace the asbestos-contaminated roofing of the building.
