Friday, May 21, 2004 - The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) on
Thursday, May 20th held the annual Press and Sponsors Carnival launch, which
formally signals the start of the carnival season. At the launch Executive
Director of CDF, Teddy Francis said the Foundation, now in its third year would
present this year, an immensely improved product in both quality and standard.
Leading up to the event, which is almost two months away, Mr. Francis encouraged
all involved in the shaping and delivery of the carnival and calypso product to
measure success and progress at every turn.
Mr. Francis is of the view that by scrutinizing their contribution, the major
players will help ensure that everything bearing the “St. Lucia Carnival” brand
name becomes synonymous with excellence. Mr. Francis further clarified the
thrust of the CDF. Moreover, the CDF, holds firmly to its views that carnival
must be more than a mere excuse for merry making.
Pointing to some major changes that will unfold as the season picks up the pace,
Mr. Francis sited among them, the Queen Show, which will no longer be held at
the National Cultural Centre, but will be moved to another venue. In addition,
he said that the two-day pageant would commence at 11 a.m. and end at 6:00 p.m.
on both days and that this year, marking the island’s 25 anniversary of
Independence, a special prize would go to the band portraying the best national
theme.
