Thursday, May 20, 2004 - The success of the Mobile Library Service to
rural communities is said to be heavily dependent on the level of responsibility
and appreciation displayed on the part of those it is meant to serve. Director
of Library Services, Brenda Paul commented at the first launching of the book
mobile in the community of Foresstiere, last week. Since then the book mobile
has been busy making its introductory rounds to Bexon, La Croix Maingot, Ti
Rocher, and the Odsan Primary School.
Ms. Paul views the launch of the Mobile Library as being a timely complement to
the national thrust ongoing in schools and the wider community, to cultivate a
culture of reading among all age groups. The month of May has been dubbed
“Reading Extravaganza Month” by the Ministry of Education, Human Resource
Development, Youth and Sports.
The project was funded by the Organization of American States (OAS). Director of
OAS, Mr. Alphonsus Antoine said the OAS perceives the mobile library to be a
sign of the will to develop self and country, on the part of the government and
people of Saint Lucia. He took the opportunity to expound on the vast multiplier
effect of what is seemingly a small project, by linking reading to the
acquisition of knowledge and skills.
The Mobile Library will visit each respective community once per-week for two
and a half hours.
