Monday, March 29, 2004 - Prime Minister, Dr Kenny D. Anthony has announced the appointment of a new Labour Party Senator in the Upper House of Parliament. He is David Demacque, a Canaries resident with a long and distinguished career in the public service.

A former Director of Agricultural Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Demacque also held a senior executive position with the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).

The new senator also has a long and distinguished career as a trade unionist in the public service, having been elected and re-elected several times to the position of President of the Civil Service Association (CSA).
Senator Demacque, who takes up his position at the next sitting of the St. Lucia Senate, replaces former Senator Petra Jeffrey-Nelson, who resigned for personal reasons.

With the new appointment, the number of senators appointed by the ruling St. Lucia Labour is again at its full complement of six. The other five are, Hilford Deterville, Calixte George, Petrus Compton, Julian Hunte, and Agatha Jn Panel.

Besides the six Government Senators, there are three Opposition United Workers Party Senators and two Independent Senators, who are appointed by the Governor General. The Opposition senators are, Gail Philip, Leonard Montoute and Rhikki Alexander, who resigned late last year and is to be replaced by Dr. Nicholas Frederick. The two independent senators are Theresa Romulus and Ferrel Charles.
