Steve Etienne newly appointed Chairman of the Telethon Committee

Steve Etienne newly appointed Chairman of the Telethon Committee

Wednesday, March 17, 2004 - Newly appointed Chairman of the Telethon Committee of the National Community Foundation (NCF) Steve Etienne, is seeking to generate a higher level of community ownership and greater public involvement for the event in the not too distant future.

Mr. Etienne, who also serves as General Manager of the Hewanorra Musical Society (HMS) exclaims that the now annual telethon has become the principle revenue generator for the philanthropic NCF. The event, he says, also serves as a powerful tool in uniting the community and bringing out the best in persons. Much work will also go into efforts at continuing to raise the standard of the event. The telethon, staged at the Pigeon Island Side Lawn was, like last year broadcasted live by the National Television Network (NTN).

One of the immediate plans is to stage a major event both in the north and south of the island. Mr. Etienne explains that he will be continuing the work of his predecessor Mr. Guy Mayers in relation to elevating the telethon to a more professional level, incorporating greater management and production skills in order to make the event more attractive to viewers and overall, more exciting to the general public. “The event is all about communities and families coming together in support of each other and therefore, we intend to make it a truly family oriented occasion,” noted the new Chairman.

He said, “We intend to have much more than just artistes performing, but to incorporate games for both children and adults along with increased side attractions.” He has again extended thanks to the many artistes who performed at the February 29 event without cost, along with the scores of volunteers. Mr. Etienne however, lamented the fact that some of the pledges made have not materialized and has called upon the general public to honour such pledges.
