Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - The Ministry of Physical Development,
Environment and Housing through the Sustainable Development and Environment
Section, has come to the aid of the Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN)
in its efforts to identify sponsorship for an essay competition.
The competition is entitled ‘My Perspective on the State of the Environment and
Environment Policies in St. Lucia’. The Ministry of the Environment has agreed
to sponsor a special prize for the overall winner of the essay competition, in
addition to an environmental tour and book vouchers for the first, second and
third places in each of the two age categories.
The deadline for the competition has been extended by one month to March 31st
2004 to facilitate greater participation from schools and young persons. Chief
Sustainable and Environment Officer Bishnu Tulsie, says the objective of the
competition is to raise societal and environmental awareness, and “to encourage
youth to develop solutions relevant to environmental problems found in St.
Lucia”. That, Mr. Tulsie indicates is consistent with the environmental mandate
of the Ministry.
In the end, the solutions identified by the young people will also contribute to
ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Physical Development, Environment and
Housing, to develop a National Environment Policy and Management Strategy for
St. Lucia.
