Monday, March 08, 2004 - Countries of the Commonwealth have been reminded
that “nowhere is freedom perfectly realised, and its enemies are not only those
who terrorise and torture. The enemies are also hunger, poverty, disease and
ignorance.”
This was the
message delivered today by Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty the Queen
in celebration of Commonwealth Day.
Her Majesty is of the firm view that the Commonwealth was doing all that it
could to tackle these challenges directly, whether in alleviating poverty or in
promoting education and health. It is also essential to strengthen the rule of
law, protect democratic freedoms and build strong civil societies.
The theme for this year’s observance is “Building a Commonwealth of freedom”.
Each year the theme is chosen to encourage people in the 53-member states of the
Commonwealth to concentrate on an aspect of common interest on Commonwealth Day,
wherever they may be. This year’s theme reflects the Commonwealth’s longstanding
commitment to individual liberty, national self determination and democratic
freedoms.
