Jamaican PM to Address Joint Session of St. Lucia Parliament |
contact: Earl Bousquet Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson will create local history when he pays a two-day state visit to St. Lucia next week. The Jamaican Prime Minister will enter the local record books on Thursday, July 1, when he will become the first Caribbean leader to address a joint sitting of the St. Lucia Parliament since Independence. Mr Patterson, who set his own political record in the number of times his party has been returned to office, has a packed diplomatic and social agenda for the two-day visit. He arrives Wednesday, June 30, when Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony will host an official welcome reception for his Jamaican counterpart. On the following day the visiting Caricom leader will make in several diplomatic calls before addressing the Joint Session of the St. Lucia Parliament. This rare joint sitting (which only takes place for the presentation of the Governor General’s Throne Speech and the opening of a new Parliament) will bring together both the Upper House (the Senate) and the Lower House (the House of Assembly). The St. Lucia Prime Minister will host a special dinner for his visiting counterpart at the Sandals Grande on the evening of July 1st and the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce will have PM Patterson for lunch at the Royal St. Lucian Hotel on July 2. While here, the Jamaican leader will also take time off to meet and greet his countrymen resident in St. Lucia. Prime Minister Patterson will host a reception for the Jamaican Community in St. Lucia at the Sandals Regency Resort and Spa at La Toc on the afternoon of July 2nd. The visiting Jamaican Prime Minister will be accompanied by government and private sector officials. Prime Minister Patterson, who is the outgoing Chairman of the Caribbean
Community (Caricom), leaves the island on July 3 for Grenada, where he and Prime
Minister Anthony will join other regional leaders for this year’s annual Caricom
