Friday, June 04, 2004 – Issues affecting the operations of Broadcasters
and the development of the media in St. Lucia were the main agenda items, when
two officials of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, the CBU, met with Prime
Minister, Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony recently.
While on island, the Secretary General of the CBU, Patrick Cozier and President
Vic Fernandes also met with local CBU Members and non members.
Mr. Fernandes informed that he had sought the support of the Government of Saint
Lucia on issues relating to Intellectual Property, while Mr. Cozier pointed to a
numbers of media issues that were discussed with CBU members here. Among the
issues were the continuation of training programmes for members, changes in the
media landscape, licensing procedures, media proliferation, media standards and
ethics.
Mr. Cozier referred to two developments in the international arena that will
impact on broadcasting in the Caribbean. One of these developments is the World
Trade Organisation on a visual protocol. He stated that the necessary steps
would be taken to ensure that those protocols were framed within a context that
was not only viable but representative of the interest of the Caribbean.
“Secondly, we want to make sure that the new relationship that are being
developed in the telecommunications world as a consequence of convergence and as
a consequence of digitization, that we are position to take advantage of some of
those opportunities that have arisen,” Mr. Cozier said.
The two CBU officials presented copies of two studies to Prime Minister, Dr.
Kenny Anthony - “ The Caribbean Code of Ethics” and “ Caribbean Integration: A
Media and Communications Plan in Support of the CCJ and CSME.
