Friday, July 16, 2004 - Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony has heaped praise on two non-English speaking Caribbean territories that have been of great help to the local health care delivery system.

Addressing the 19th Caribbean Cardiology Conference last night, Dr Anthony singled out the delegations from Cuba and neighbouring Martinique for special mention and recognition.

In the case of Cuba, the Prime Minister said he wanted to recognize “that country’s pioneering work in the field of medicine.”

He said “the creative and innovative spirits and the revolutionary instincts of the Cubans have led them to create a health care system that is the envy of the developing world.”

Noting that “the generosity of the Cuban people is legendary,” Dr Anthony told cardiologists from across the region: “Many a medical student from St. Lucia and other countries of the region, through the granting of Cuban scholarships, have benefited from their expert knowledge in the field of medicine.”

The Prime Minister also acknowledged that “many a patient who faced the prospect of being squeezed out of the opportunity of procuring affordable health care has benefited from the Cuban health care system.”

As a consequence, the St. Lucia Prime Minister emphasized that “the embrace of family must be accorded Cuba – no more the posture of the Podigal Son, no more the dictation to family by those intent on division.”

The second delegation identified for praise by Dr Anthony was that from the La Meynard Hospital in neighbouring Martinique.

Noting that St. Lucians and Martinicans have always shared a special relationship, the Prime Minister said that in recent times “that special relationship has blossomed in the field of medicine.”

For years, he explained, “many a St. Lucian has travelled for specialised treatment at the medical facilities at La Meynard” and that special relationship “has saved the lives of many St. Lucians.”

For this, Prime Minister Anthony said, the Government of St. Lucia “is eternally grateful and looks forward to the continuation and strengthening of these bonds.”
