Tuesday, January 13, 2004 - The St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association SLBWA
is this week hosting a workshop targeting the teachers of multi-handicap
children. Executive Director of the Association Anthony Avril says a number of
educators will attend this special workshop.
“The teachers are looking forward to this workshop as it would greatly enhance
their skills. The teachers would be coming not only from the Blind Welfare
Association. They will also be coming from the other institutions for persons
with disabilities.”
Avril says that this year the Association will continue its efforts to practice
a principle of inclusion rather than exclusion of the disabled.
“Our view is that we should not discard anyone, and we have seen in practice
that if multi-handicap children have the environment and the training required,
some of them can live a much better quality of life in keeping with their
potential.”
The workshop is being conducted by two specialists from the Perkins School for
the Blind in Boston. The workshop is being held at the District Two (2)
Education Office at Sans Souci.
