Tuesday, February 03, 2004 - The signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding between the Office of Private Sector Relations and the Chamber of
Commerce, signals the continuing role of the OPSR in facilitating capacity
building and training opportunities for the private sector.
The signing which took place on Monday January 02nd marks the commencement of
phase two of the Private Sector Development Programme under the Business
Environment Enhancement component
Economic Policy Advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister Adrian Augier says
the Chamber of Commerce is the conduit for direct benefits to the private
sector.
He says, “The expected outcomes of this project, which will be financed with
OPSR support include: institutional strengthening, the establishment within the
chamber of an employment centre to deliver recruitment, screening, job placement
and hiring services to the local business community. We think this is very
important because while employment opportunities continue to be scarce we do
feel that there is a need to match whatever employment opportunities we do have
to the skills that are already available in the economy.”
President of the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce Techla Deterville says in the
first phase of the project, the chamber was able to acquire the services of a
trade analyst, secure a documentation centre and library and up to date
equipment. She called on members to take advantage of the available resources
which will be put into human resource development and productivity workshops.
