Tuesday, December 14, 2004 – As the House Assembly today, pulled down the
curtains on proceedings for 2004, the highlight of the year’s final meeting of
the House surrounded the motion for Parliament to authorise the guarantee of
US$7 million to meet the financial and other obligations of World Cup Saint
Lucia Incorporated.
World Cup Saint Lucia Incorporated (WCSL) also known as the Local Organizing
Committee (LOC) is charged with the administrative responsibilities of World Cup
2007. World Cup Saint Lucia Incorporated oversees cricket operations, ground and
air transportation, security, finance and law in the context of preparations for
World Cup 2007.
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Honourable Dr. Kenney Anthony on concluding
the House Debate on the World Cup Motion, said that the government intended to
present a ‘Master Plan’ to the nation. He said the Plan would detail the
benefits that Government expected the various sectors to accrue, as a result of
Saint Lucia’s hosting of six first round matches and one semi-final match.
“I believe that the Member for Micoud North indicated that the people of Saint
Lucia have not received the Master Plan. They can be rest assured they will get
a Master Plan. They can be certain that they will have ample opportunity to see
that plan and to properly identify their role and place in the process. I need
however, to point out Mr. Speaker that already, critical elements of that
programme are falling into place,” Dr. Anthony said.
Dr. Anthony further stated that the accommodation sector was moving at a very
satisfactory pace, as the government continued to ensure that the island’s room
stock increases steadily in the hospitality sector.
“In addition”, he said, “to the Beaches Hotel that has been announced, I believe
the Minister of Tourism will be in a position very shortly to announce a further
investment of $US 120,000.00 on the causeway, to compliment the Beaches
property. So slowly, all the pieces are falling together and I really do believe
that it is going to be a very important opportunity for Saint Lucia, and we have
to share the benefits throughout the length and breadth of` this country.”
The Government of Saint Lucia is committed to meeting all costs related to
training facilities, stadium development, the enhancement of air and seaports,
among other provisions. The overall estimated cost of hosting the event is
projected at EC$35 million.
Other Bills, which were down for debate, included the National Lotteries
Amendment, Government Corporations and the Water and Sewerage Bill.
