Tuesday, December 6, 2004 - Minister for Physical Development, Environment and Housing, Honourable Ferguson John has called on St. Lucians to become more energy conscious, because the dependency on imported fuel was becoming greater, with demand steadily increasing even in small territories, such as Saint Lucia.

Speaking in the context of the recent hike in the price of petrol and developments in the global market, Minister John, in his broadcast statement to mark the observance of Energy Week suggested that the trend almost conclusively indicated that the cost of fuel was not likely to become any cheaper for the island, calling on the public to become even more energy conscious.

“While the world will continue to depend heavily on oil for the foreseeable future, an energy future based solely on petroleum will be subject to the vagaries of the world market, and fraught with environmental risk. Already, as importers and users of petroleum products, we St. Lucians have experienced the effects of rising oil prices in our daily lives and on our pockets,” Minister John said.

Minister John proposed that the nation ponder some profound questions that can stimulate a change of attitude: “We need to ask ourselves are considering all of the energy supply options opened to us? What are we doing to use energy wisely? Are we trying to reduce the effects of energy consumption on the environment? What are we doing in order to ensure a sustainable energy future? If we are honest to ourselves, the answer to all these questions will be not enough.”

Energy Week was launched on Monday December 06th, with an exhibition at the Castries City Hall.
