Wednesday, December 1, 2004 - The Ministry of Commerce, Investment and
Consumer Affairs has embarked on a business initiative to highlight the work of
local artisans, specifically at this time of year.
After collaborating with ten companies, the Ministry and artisans mounted the
first display of handicraft specialty gift items on Saturday 27th at the J.Q.
Charles Mall.
Commerce and Industry Officer, Ms. Fercinta Louisy said the KADEAU NOEL venture
provided the artisans with the opportunity to tap into the domestic market.
“The objective of this initiative is actually threefold. The first being to
facilitate the continued development and penetration of new markets for
handicraft and hand crafted specialty gift items. Secondly, to facilitate the
marketing and sales of functional craft and gift items during this Christmas
season, and thirdly, to increase public awareness of the availability of locally
made gift items.”
Ms. Louisy said artisans readily embraced the concept and have so far received
favourable comments from the buying public. She said a wide variety both
functional and decorative items were also sold.
“We had hand made Christmas decorations, using madras swell as well as spice,
cinnamon. It was really creatively designed and we had a good response from the
public. We had ceramics, Christmas cards, featuring local designs which were
hand painted; we also had massage oils and clay products to name a few.”
The Kadeau Noel Extravaganza will be mounted at other locations throughout the
season. So far, the Ministry has been able to confirm the Gable Woods Mall as
one of the venues, where a promotion will be held on the 18th of December.
