Wednesday, December, 1, 2004 - Physical Education Officer attached to the
Department of Youth and Sports Michael Pierre has said that lack of inter-house
competition in schools was of some concern to the department.
Speaking on the GIS’ Sports in Action programme over the weekend, Mr. Pierre
suggested that the entire sporting competitions among schools would improve, if
schools were able to host inter-house competition in several sporting
disciplines.
“Almost every school has their inter-house track and field meet, which seems to
be a big thing in their calendar. I can recall that when we went to school track
and field this was the thing within the school system. Our concern is that if
you can find the time to organise track and field, I know there are some
constraints, but an effort should be made in organising your inter-house
football, netball, basketball, or do it on a form basis,” Said Mr. Pierre.
Mr. Pierre suggested that if schools did this, they would have an idea of who
their talented students are: “There’ll be no need to be calling trials or asking
people to sign up. This is time consuming. Through the inter-house competitions
you can pick a nucleus of persons, who you then fine tune to represent your
school and I think that will get greater results.”
Mr. Pierre said sporting events put on by the department this year have been
quite successful so far, despite a few drawbacks from time to time.
