Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - Children of Anse La Vedere, a small
community in the constituency of Anse La Raye/Canaries will have a lot to tell,
about their unique summer vacation when they return to school for the new
academic year, following the completion of a comprehensive summer school
programme.
Participants from the age of five years attended the summer school, which was
hosted by a group of Canadians led by Michelle Anderson, Executive Director of
the activity, dubbed “the St. Lucia Learning” Project.
Mrs. Anderson, who spoke to the GIS at the official closing ceremony of the
four-week programme explained that her team of nine volunteers used learning
techniques that would enable the children to overcome difficulties with reading
and basic Mathematics.
Parliamentary Representative for the Anse La Raye/Canaries constituency,
Honourable Cyprian Lansiquot commended the initiative and effort invested in
keeping the children constructively occupied during the summer vacation: “As you
know, the community of Anse La Vedere is one of the poor communities on this
island, and whatever assistance, whatever help that you all are giving us, we
are indeed very grateful for it.”
Michelle Anderson who resides in Canada said that she was inspired to conduct
the project due to her family’s long history with Anse La Vedere and her desire
to give back to the community.
