Tuesday, August 17, 2004 – Prime Minister, Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony has issued a challenge to the Commonwealth Secretariat to establish a Global Youth Development Fund which will give deeper meaning to its youth development policies, as well as facilitate more funding for youth enterprise development. Dr. Anthony made that remark during the signing ceremony for the implementation of a Youth Enterprise Development Fund in St. Lucia. The initial funds were donated by the Commonwealth to the tune of $EC100,000.

“The commonwealth needs to create a global fund for youth development, to encourage the private sector in the Commonwealth and else where to provide more funding for youth, in much the same way that the Commonwealth Secretariat has established funds for private sector development,” Dr. Anthony said.

While thanking the Commonwealth Secretariat, Prime Minister Anthony suggested that a global fund would assist poorer governments in reducing youth unemployment.

Deputy Secretary General, Mrs. Mugasha said that the Commonwealth Secretariat identified with Dr, Anthony’s vision to increase opportunities for young people: “The Commonwealth Secretariat will continue to consult and collaborate with governments and partners, so as to ensure that youth perspectives are brought to the fore in a number of key sector programmes, including poverty alleviation and sustainable development.”
