Monday, August 09, 2004 - The Cabinet of Ministers, accompanied by
members of the Committee of Permanent Secretaries, met with the National
Economic Council (NEC) on Friday, 6th August 2004 in the National Insurance
Corporation’s Conference Facility, to receive the Inaugural Report of the NEC.
The presentation by the NEC, led by its President, Richard Peterkin looked at
the Development Framework within which it operated, articulated the need for an
integrated strategic development approach, and identified sector specific
initiatives and cross sector strategies for stimulating the economy in the
immediate to short term.
Members of the Cabinet of Ministers questioned the NEC on issues raised in the
report and sought clarification on some of the recommendations and strategies
proposed.
There was a general consensus among the Cabinet members that the report was a
good one, and that further dialogue with some specific sectors was required in
order that it may be informed by current Government initiatives.
The meeting ended with an agreement to continue the discussion at a follow-up
meeting with the Committee of Permanent Secretaries and another with the
Cabinet, to respond to the issues which were raised.
