Friday, April 30, 2004 - The administration of justice is to be further
expedited on the island, following the announcement of new magistrates by the
Judicial and Legal Services Commission of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
The Commission has announced the appointment of St. Lucian, Errol Walker and Ann
Marie Smith of Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI). Mr. Walker has been
practising law from 1983 and has served as Crown Counsel, acting Magistrate of
the Traffic Court and was Director of Public Prosecutions for eight years.
Ms. Smith has been employed as Judicial Assistant to the Eastern Caribbean
Supreme Court based in the BVI since August of 2002. Her legal experience
includes working in the United Kingdom and Jamaica.
The new appointees are today, undertaking orientation exercises designed to
boost their effectiveness and efficiency in the execution of their duties, and
to allow them to operate in as much an independent manner as possible. The new
Magistrates are also being exposed to a wide range of relevant topics including
sentencing, bail, delay reduction, court efficiency and the use of technology to
assist in case management.
The appointments take effect on May 1st, 2004. The Judicial and Legal Services
Commission says the name of a third magistrate is to be announced shortly.
