Tuesday, April 20, 2004 - The Co-operative movement might be the only
sector to provide hope and ensure the survival for the region, in view of the
threats posed by a sharp decline in the economic sector. That was the view
expressed by the Registrar of Co-operatives, Cheryl St. Catherine at the
official opening ceremony of the first ever Caribbean Cooperative Youth
Conference, which ended here on the weekend.
According to Ms. St. Catherine, considering the tough economic landscape, the
only resource small island states posses as a possible means of counteracting
the impending threat of economic downfall, may be the youth. Ms. St. Catherine
is therefore, appealing to the younger generation to take on the enterprise of
thrift co-operative to a higher dimension, as a means of survival.
The April 14th to 18th Conference was designed to implement a number of
initiatives aimed at enhancing the co-operative sector and also to influence
greater youth participation.
