Thursday, April 29, 2004 - Construction industry professionals have come
to the close of a two day seminar on Managing Construction Risks, which was
hosted by the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities.
The workshop covered the entire spectrum of issues relating to the sector and
was conducted by property developer and qualified quantity surveyor, Martyn
Bould and attorney at law, Gerald Katz.
Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Felix Finisterre says
construction professionals must use foresight, if they are to effectively
mitigate construction risks. In addition, he says they must be proactive in
coming up with practical solutions whenever challenges arise, as the industry by
its very nature is vulnerable to many factors, including the vagaries of the
weather. The Minister says for government and his Ministry, successful
implementation of projects have been no less challenging compared to others in
the business, with many projects suffering cost overruns due to unforeseen
circumstances.
Project management was another area the Minister cited as critical to the realm
of risks management. However, Minister Finisterre remained confident that the
professionals who attended the seminar from April 28th – 29th were now better
equipped to anticipate, plan and mitigate construction risks.
