Friday, April 16, 2004 - Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of
Health, Human Services, Family Affairs and Gender Relations, Dr. Stephen King
has called for the Ministry to introduce a programme of injury prevention. Dr.
King was speaking on the Government Information Service (GIS) programme, Issues
and Answers on Monday, April 12 in observance of World Health Day.
Dr. King is also advocating the need for a multi-sectoral approach to
establishing a more effective method of road safety practices for both motorists
and pedestrians alike, which would include the Ministry of Health, the police,
the Transport Board, Mini Bus Association and Taxi Drivers Association, among
others.
According to the CMO, the situation is crucial enough to merit prompt attention,
since injury resulting from motor vehicular accidents is a major cause of ill
health and loss of lives. Notwithstanding a visibly improved emergency medical
service over the years, Dr. King advocates for the implementation of a more
structured emergency system.
World Health Day, was observed under the theme, “Road Safety is no Accident”
