Thursday, April 29, 2004 - Barbara Jacobs-Small, the pioneer of Tea Time
Jazz, which is held at La Place Carenage as part of the schedule of events of
the St. Lucia Jazz Festival was on Tuesday, April 27 honoured by the owners of
the venue, St. Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) for her contribution
to the growth of the event. The ceremony took place in the conference room of
SLASPA during the launch of the event, which takes place on May 10-13.
In presenting the award to Mrs. Jacobs-Small, Manager of SLASPA, Vincent
Hippolyte notes that in Tea Time Jazz resides the formula for connecting the St.
Lucia Jazz Festival to the people, nationals and tourists alike.
Mrs. Jacobs-Small made a brief acceptance speech, in which she credited SLASPA
for their support, and for facilitating the growth of the event. She shared the
opinion of the organisers, that Tea Time Jazz had come a long way from its
inception six years ago. She said the event had almost outgrown its definition
as a fringe event.
Mr. Hippolyte contends that La Place Carenage and Tea Time Jazz present an ideal
example of how to marry tourism with culture to the mutual benefit of all. He
noted that artistes and entertainers were often used to promote activities, but
were seldom given the opportunity for their own exposure. He lauded Tea Time
Jazz for providing a unique forum for local artistes.
La Place Carenage has over the years come to be known as an assured space for
local artistes to showcase their talent to a non-paying audience. This year’s
offering of Tea Time Jazz performances will feature star saxophonist Barbara
Cadet, Diamond Steel Orchestra, Disturbing Joan and Harvey Millar.
