Tuesday, June 17, 2003 - Normalcy has returned to the traffic flow along
Manoel Street, as pedestrians and motorists now enjoy safer and better road
access into the city, following the completion of the Manoel Street Bridge
Rehabilitation Project.
The bridge had become extensively worn out over time. Chief Engineer in the
Ministry of Communications, Works and Transport, Doltan Cenac, said, despite
presenting some structural challenges to the contractor, the twelve week project
has significantly enhanced both the structural and aesthetic quality of the
bridge.
“Associated works included reconstruction of the footways, resurfacing the
carriage way and the provision of new parapets. The project was undertaken by
C.O. Williams Limited for the sum of $EC 202, 750, and was supervised by
Consultant Tom Walcott, who ensured the project was completed within budget, to
the highest quality standard,” Cenac said.
He added that the Manoel Street Bridge is one of five major bridges which have
been rehabilitated or reconstructed during the last 18 months.
Other bridges which have been restored include, the Caico Bridge in Anse La Raye,
the Marc Floissac Bridge in Castries South East, the Belmont Bridge in Dennery
North and the Vijé Cacoa Bridge in Micoud South.
Later this year, the Lumiere Bridge in Dennery will be given attention. In total
some $1.9 million have been spent on major bridge repairs over the last 18
months.
