Thursday, October 30, 2003 - The committee charged with the
responsibility of ensuring that the integrity of the Pitons Management Area is
in no way comprised, will be officially launched on November 2, 2003.
The committee has its genesis in a June 2003 decision by the Cabinet of
Ministers to establish the Pitons Management Area Advisory Committee, comprising
representatives from several public and private agencies, community groups from
Choiseul and Soufriere, the tourism related business sector in Soufriere, and
the National Commission for UNESCO.
Earlier this year, St. Lucia submitted its application to the World Heritage
Committee, for consideration to designate the Piton Management Area as a natural
world heritage site.
The committee however is expected to remain a permanent structure whether or not
the Piton Management Area is accepted as a natural world heritage site. One of
the principle roles of the committee is to sensitize the general public to the
tremendous benefits of keeping the area unspoiled.
Meanwhile, a technical evaluation of the Pitons Management Area is expected to
be undertaken in January of 2004. The World Heritage Centre has charged an
international agency with that responsibility. The results of this evaluation
will determine the acceptability of the Pitons Management Area as a natural
world heritage site.
The Pitons Management Area comprises the Soufriere Marine Management Area, the
Pitons, and the Sulphur Springs.
