Wednesday, June 11, 2003 – Form 4 students from six secondary schools on the island have begun participating in a national debating competition, as the Ministry of Tourism seeks out a representative for St. Lucia to serve as Junior Tourism Minister, at the upcoming Caribbean Tourism Youth congress slated for St. Thomas in October, 2003.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), as part of its annual Youth Awareness Tourism Programme. According to Deepa Gidharry -Tourism Officer responsible for Education, “every year at the CTO’s annual conference there is the Youth Tourism Congress where you have young people from all over the Caribbean coming together and discussing different issues pertinent to the tourism industry.”

The young people will discuss current issues like what’s affecting the industry and the way forward for the industry. “The point is that when you have young people like that coming together, it not only stimulates their interest and improves their pubic speaking skills, but it’s also a way of generating new ideas from the youth out there and that is always a welcome development, said Gidharry.

The six participating schools are St. Mary’s College, Vieux Fort Comprehensive Campus B, Micoud Secondary, Castries and Soufriere Comprehensive, and Corinth Secondary. The finals of the competition will take place at the conference room of the National Insurance Corporation headquarters in Castries on July, 19th 2003.
