Saint Lucia to from World Bank HIS/AIDS Project |
Contact: Rose Marie Harris Monday, February 03, 2003 – Saint Lucia will benefit from a World Bank project aimed at assisting Caribbean countries in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. The US$155 million multi-country programme entitled “Prevention and Control Adaptable Programme Lending” will help preventing the spread of the disease by reducing transmission among the high risk and vulnerable groups and improving the access by people living with HIV/AIDS to care which is effective, affordable and equitable within the context of government development policy. The programme will also seek to strengthen the Caribbean’s institutional capacity to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in a sustainable way. A team from the World Bank headed by a lead health specialist for Latin America and the Caribbean, Patricio Marquez, was in Saint Lucia to meet with government officials for discussions. The parties agreed on the objectives and scope of a possible HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Project for the Caribbean to be financed by the World Bank. |
