Tuesday, May 20, 2003 – On Tuesday, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny
Anthony joined Standard four students of the La Guerre Primary school in
Babonneau for a reading lesson in observance of May as Reading Month.
A former teacher and President of the Saint Lucia Teachers Union as well as a
former Minister for Education Dr. Anthony was selected and invited by the class
to specially read a text selected by the students.
Dr. Anthony enjoying the moment spent with the young people and his continued
passion for the classroom and for children, described the event as a “wonderful
opportunity to re-engage myself in the classroom” According to Dr. Anthony “I
have always been anxious to demystify the office of the Prime Minister. It is
true there are persons who engage in disrespecting that office from time time,
but I think the students think that this is a very special office, that after
all the Prime Minister is an ordinary human being with ordinary feels and the
rest of it and they need to experience the company of these individuals from
time to time.”
Parliamentary Representative for Babonneau Honourable Felix Finnesterre was also
on hand to engage in a reading lesson and explained that it was time well spent.
“I rather enjoyed reading some Cope Lapen stories this morning and I had a
little discourse with the kids afterwards and a little comprehension exercises,”
Minister Finnesterre ended.
The theme for this year’s reading month is “Education Through reading.” Earlier
this month, Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy declared the
month open as she described reading as the key that will open doors of
opportunity not only while at school but for the rest of life.
