Wednesday July 02, 2003 - President Elect of the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, St. Lucia’s External Affairs Minister, Senator Honourable Julian Hunte, was the specially invited guest at a dinner reception hosted by the Diplomatic Corp in St. Lucia on the weekend.

Speaking at the function, Senator Hunte reiterated that during the one year presidency, his aim will be to establish priorities that are realistic, with a heavy focus on globalisation and trade liberalisation. He indicated however, that institutional reform and peace and security, will also be on the priority list.

“The Cabinet of the UN Presidency will comprise CARICOM Diplomats and other professionals, including St. Lucian nationals,” Senator Hunte said. Thus far, Senator Hunte has been commended by the Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Kofi Annan for that initiative.

According to Senator Hunte, the St. Lucia Presidency raises the profile of St. Lucia and the rest of CARICOM within the United Nations.

Senator Hunte was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly on June 6, 2003, and will assume office from September 16, 2003 to September 16, 2004.
