Contact: Prime Minister's Press Secretary

February 24, 2003 - The Government learned this morning, with much regret, of the death of Mother Mary Irma Hilger.

Mother Irma, as she was more affectionately known here, started the St. Jude’s Hospital in Vieux Fort in 1966. She also helped establish the first Nursing School at Victoria Hospital.

Born in 1917, Mother Irma died earlier today in the United States at the age of 85.

The Government of St. Lucia, through the Prime Minister, wishes to express its sincere condolences to the Archbishop of Castries and the Roman Catholic Church.
