Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - Contrary to media reports, the M&C Fine Arts
Awards will continue to receive significant support from the M&C Group of
Companies that has been the main proponent of this special event for the past 25
years.
This announcement came from a director of the M&C Group of Companies, Mr. Peter
Devaux during the official opening of the M&C Fine Arts Awards Exhibition, held
last Friday at the La Place Carenage. The statement was made against the
backdrop of the decision by M&C to allow for greater government and private
sector support of the awards. At a press conference in early September 2003, the
executive chairman of M&C Group of Companies, Fred Devaux, announced that the
company will lessen its involvement in the scheme due to its inability to
continue to provide the level of support for the event which has expanded
rapidly over the years.
Speaking at Friday’s ceremony, Mr. Peter Devaux assured the gathering of M&C’s
continued commitment to the fine arts awards.
“We will continue to sponsor the four main prizes - the literary, performing,
visual and the Joseph Devaux Awards categories. It also allows us to double the
prize money for those four chosen awards, thereby making the M&C financial
contribution approximately $EC 25 000 a year,” .Devaux said.
Minister for Social Transformation, Culture and Local Government, Honourable
Menissa Rambally emphasized the importance of M&C’s contribution to the Awards.
She added however, that for the continued development of the arts, the support
of government and the private sector is paramount.
Meanwhile, will be a new name for the awards come 2005, when the CDF would have
taken control of the event. The upcoming M&C Fine Arts Awards ceremony is slated
for January 24, 2004.
