Wednesday, March 19, 2003 - Efforts towards promoting the island’s carnival celebrations overseas continue with the Saint Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB) and the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) leading the charge. The CDF’s Executive Director, Teddy Francis, says much work has taken place over the past two months in highlighting the upcoming event in major markets like the US, Canada and Europe.

Francis says closer collaboration between the two agencies has resulted in increased publicity and promotion for Carnival 2003, set for the 21st & 22nd of July. “What we have done is to decide this year to have a different approach. One of the major launches we had in the past was the New York launch of Carnival towards the end of April, targeting mainly Saint Lucians and the other West Indies friends in New York. We have changed that approach, seeing that the budgetary figure was significant in past years towards this one and so we have decentralized the efforts and will be using the ‘Islands in the Park,’ which is a series of West Indian open air events in the major cities of Atlanta, Miami, New York and Washington.”

Francis says two rounds of visits throughout selected Caribbean destinations will take place to ensure the word on Saint Lucia’s carnival gets out in the region. Technical and possible financial assistance were also hinted too as a means of assisting other major carnival stakeholders like the calypso and carnival bands associations.
