Tuesday, December 02, 2003 - Cabinet Secretary Dr.James Fletcher has
called for more sensitization of both the public and private sectors on the
impact that the formation of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME),
will have on specific sectors at both the local and regional levels.
The Cabinet Secretary was at the time commenting on the terms of reference of a
committee appointed by Cabinet to review the CARICOM Single Market and Economy
and finalise the process for St.Lucia’s participation. He noted that there are
concerns which require open dialogue and must be discussed at length.
“What also has to happen is that the private sector must articulate what its
concerns are. They must state what their fears are, what are the issues that
concern them the most, so that these can be tackled upfront, because there are
myriad issues that have to be looked at,” remarked Dr.Fletcher.
According to the Cabinet Secretary, the CSME review committee can be the
catalyst for the dialogue process. Headed by St.Lucia’s Ambassador to CARICOM
His Excellency Earl Huntley, the committee is expected to identify the impact
the CSME would have on certain sectors of the economy and to determine what
could be done to minimize any negative impacts.
