Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - Two skills training development programmes
spearheaded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund, are the latest in efforts to relieve
the youth from a state of joblessness.
Clive Hippolyte Project Manager for the Basic Needs Trust Fund says the
programmes were implemented in different parts of the island.
Hippolyte says that the programme provided training for 100 young persons
between the ages of 16 and 35, from Anse La Raye, Dennery and Gros Islet in the
North of St.Lucia and from Micoud and Canaries in the South. Hippolyte added
that the objective is to make participants more employable in technical and non
– technical areas.
An estimated 150 thousand US Dollars have been pumped into this programme which
is funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund in collaboration with the Caribbean
Development Bank and the Government of St.Lucia.
Although the programme in the north of the island has been suspended due to
unforeseen difficulties, the one in the South has been proceeding smoothly with
some persons landing very promising job attachments.
A graduation ceremony for participants in the south of the island will be
conducted in February. The BNTF has plans to implement similar projects during
the course of this year, pending the approval of the Caribbean Development Bank.
