Wednesday, August 07, 2002 - The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National Youth Council (NYC) will be holding the first in a series of HIV/AIDS community workshops aimed at increasing awareness among young people in Canaries on Saturday, August 10, 2002. The workshops will target a total of 160 persons from the communities of Canaries, Cul De Sac, Roseau, Anse La Raye and Soufriere.

Director of The Bureau of Health Education Edward Emmanuel explained that one of the objectives of the workshop is to sensitize participants to the current situation of HIV/AIDS in the Saint Lucia and the rest of the Caribbean. “To raise the awareness of participants to the risk factors propelling or fuelling the epidemic in St.Lucia and to develop control measures in order to prevent the spread of HIV among youth,” Edward explained.

Several methods will be used to educate the young participants during the workshops such as role playing and drama, while actively participating in these sessions. “We’ll be hoping that the young persons will come up with strategic actions or interventions to control HIV and AIDS as they see it. We hope that they would identify at least three possible projects for implementation,” disclosed Emmanuel.

According to Emmanuel the National Youth Council has been very active in mobilising its members and affiliates to attend these workshops and it is anticipated that about forty representatives will attend each of the four workshops. Resource persons will cover key topics including the Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS, Risk Factors and Control Measures. The sessions will be conducted throughout the remainder of this month and will culminate in September.
