US Airways Starts Second Non-Stop Flight to St. Lucia |
Monday, February 04, 2002 - Tourism officials are all excited over a second US Airways non-stop flight out of Philadelphia that began on the weekend. US Airways, in December 2001, commenced its weekly scheduled to St. Lucia. According to Tourism Minister Honourable Philip J. Pierre, word from US Airways officials is that the new service is based on increased booking numbers for St. Lucia. The new flight he says fulfils a major objective in the St. Lucia Tourist Board’s current three year marketing strategy for the US. “The US market is still a very important market to us and the Eastern seaboard is where we get most of our visitors. That flight will surely improve the airlift into St. Lucia and that’s rather good news for the tourism industry,” said Minister Pierre. Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have also announced increases in flights for this season. Mr. Pierre, who is also St. Lucia’s Commerce, Investment and Consumer Affairs Minister, says the increases are a direct result of efforts at improving the island’s overall tourism product. “We’ve got to ensure that St. Lucia as a destination maintains its reputation. However, what affects our tourism most is what happens outside. Therefore if there is recession outside, St. Lucia’s tourism will suffer. I think, however, that things are looking up and our new marketing arrangements, which included redoing our logo ‘St. Lucia Simply Beautiful’ and a new website, are getting some good reviews.” Tourism officials say since the introduction of the weekly Philadelphia/St. Lucia service on December 15, 2001 the route has proven to be extremely successful for an inaugural flight bringing in an additional ninety visitors per flight to the island. Tourism Director Hilary Modeste the second flight is certainly an added bonus and is an indication of US Airways’ confidence in St. Lucia’s tourism industry. |
