Contact: St. Lucia Tourist Board

Castries, Friday, February 01, 2002 -- The St. Lucia Tourist Board steps up its promotions in the United States next week when Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste and SLTB Chairman Desmond Skeete travel to Chicago and New York for St. Lucia Week.

The five day-promotional blitz, aptly called St. Lucia Week, combines 2 major press launches, press interviews and conferences and a number of meetings with key US tour operators, travel agents and airline officials, all in an effort to increase business out of the US market.

According to SLTB Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste, St. Lucia Week will offer tourism stakeholders in the US the opportunity to meet with local tourism officials to familiarise themselves with all aspects of St. Lucia’s tourism product. Meetings have already been scheduled with Chicago tour operator, Apple Vacations, as well as GoGo Tours and Travel Impressions in New York.

St. Lucia Week will also be used to launch the St. Lucia Jazz Festival in the United States. According to Director of Tourism Hilary Modeste, the Tourist Board is making every effort to market this year’s Jazz Festival in the US.

"The US market will a difficult one this year for two reasons, the downturn in the US economy and of course the fear of flying. For this reason the Board has taken the decision to increase our promotional efforts in that market." says Modeste. "For the first time in two years the Tourist Board will carry our 2 major press launches in both New York and Chicago. This will be accompanied by major radio promotions in 4 of the major cities in the US, namely Philadelphia, Chicago, New York and Atlanta."

Promotions of St. Lucia’s Jazz Festival kicked off last month with the airing of St. Lucia Week on BET Jazz., a special week of television programming featuring past performances of the St. Lucia Jazz Festival. The programming was also re-broadcast on BET International and the BET Music Channel, giving the festival added exposure to its viewer ship of 85 million.

St. Lucia Week takes place from January 04 - 08.
