Standards Bureau Releases Standards Catalogue |
April 8, 2002 - The St. Lucia Bureau of Standards has released its first catalogue of St. Lucia National Standards. The thirty page catalogue lists all standards and codes of practice adopted by the Bureau as at January 31st, 2002, numerically, sectionally and by subject. It also highlights all compulsory (mandatory) standards. The scope of each of the standards is outlined in the catalogue to facilitate easy understanding of the content of each standard. There is also general information about the operations of the Bureau and the draft standards under development by the various technical committees of the organisation. In addition, areas to be explored for standardisation in this coming year are also highlighted in the publication. To date, most of the standards adopted by the SLBS are based on regional and international standards such as that of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), CODEX Alimentarius (which is a joint commission of the WHO and the FAO responsible for the development of food standards), the Caribbean Common Market Standards Council and the OAS. A copy of the catalogue is currently being distributed to all manufacturers, exporters, government departments and other agencies on the island free of charge. Information Officer of the Bureau, Sariah Best-Joseph says the catalougue is a very useful easy reference document for persons who are interested in obtaining information about the Bureau, its operations, services available and more importantly the national standards of St. Lucia. “We are working towards improving our information service offer to our clients. Having the catalogue at your disposal therefore means not having to call the Bureau on every occasion to determine whether a national standard exists for a particular field or area, or even ascertaining the cost of the standard, as this is all highlighted in the catalogue. Ordering and purchasing of standards will become relatively easier as the only decision would be which national standard best suits your needs” explains the Information Officer. Purchases of the standards in the SLBS catalogue, can be made by phone, fax or e-mail to the Bureau. Through its affiliations and international connections with such bodies as the ISO, the British Standards Institute and many similar organizations throughout the world, the St. Lucia Bureau of Standards, can source and where necessary purchase standards, technical regulations and conformity assessment procedures which obtain globally for organisations and persons requiring such documents. The Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards was established under the Standards Act (#14) of 1990, and started operations on 01 April 1991. The Standards Act provides for the preparation and promotion of standards in relation to goods, services, processes and practices used locally. The Standards Act gives the Bureau the responsibility to develop and promote standards for products and services for the protection of the health and safety of consumers and the environment, as well as for industrial development, in order to promote the enhancement of the economy of St. Lucia.
