Seeking Out the Youth’s Sporting Talent |
Contact: Rose Marie Harris Monday, June 17, 2002 – “Talent Identification” is the focus of phase two of the Junior Sports Programme. Youth and Sports Officer Ligorius Marquis, says in this phase of the programme young people now have a better chance of developing their skills in any two sports. Marquis explained that “In the first phase of the programme we had a two hour programme every Saturday where they did two sports, one hour each that was just like an introduction to the programme. But in this second phase what we are doing is instead of having the two sports in two hours we will have one sport for two hours for the first three months and the other sport for the next three months.” Marquis feels this programme, which is now in its third year, is not just a pastime but is one way of ensuring that young people can make a meaningful contribution to sports on the island. “Young persons have been calling out for better playing facilities and when you pass on a Saturday morning, the playing fields over the island are virtually empty so we thought that this was the best time to utilise it by getting the young persons involved and at the same time making use of the facilities.” |
