Monday, January 28, 2002 - The Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU), in responding to concerns raised over the number of unemployed young persons will attempt to engage them in a series of dialogues dubbed “The East Castries Project.”

SEDU’s Director Peter Lorde says the intention is to motivate the young persons to make the transition from unemployment to gainful employment, including self-employment. He says SEDU has held a brain storming session with some community leaders and various community-based organizations. Lorde adds that shortly, his department will begin a community-wide survey of young unemployed people and community-based organizations of East Castries.

“We are hoping to develop a firm grip on the nature and scope of the situation with a view to develop a holistic approach to a long lasting solution. That holistic approach will necessitate a collaborative effort of public and private sector organizations, religious, social, cultural and sporting groups together with educational institutions. All of these organizations will be approached by SEDU for their valuable input,” Lorde explains.

In the meantime SEDU is appealing to all well-meaning citizens to forward their ideas to the unit for consideration. A special call is going out to successful persons who originated from East Castries to volunteer their time and services in the areas of motivational speaking and teaching of business classes.

Following this intervention the initiative will be evaluated to fine-tune and replicate it around the Castries basin. The lessons learnt from the overall pilot project will be put into practice around the country.
