Monday, June 03, 2002 - Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Honourable Dr. Kenny Anthony has been successful in securing an “Investment and Commercial Draft Agreement” with the Kuwaiti government amounting to 9.8 million US dollars towards the improvement of the Castries-Gros Islet Highway.

Dr. Anthony made the announcement on Monday June 03, 2002, when he met with members of the local media at the Government Information Service (GIS). Explaining the new arrangement Dr. Anthony, said government is at present exploring the various options that are available to address the island’s road network.

Prime Minister Anthony stated that the Kuwaiti government will be signing an agreement signalling the disbursement of funds for the project. The St. Lucian government for its part, he says is undertaking technical studies as to precisely how to proceed.

In addition, Dr. Anthony said, there is agreement in principle that the next project that will receive funding from the Kuwaiti government is a “Community Road Rehabilitation Project” in the amount of EC 20 Million dollars. The focus, according to Dr. Anthony, will be on roads in the Choiseul and Castries South East constituencies. Dr. Anthony noted that preliminary studies for the project have already been completed and what is now expected of the government is the last technical study which is an Economic Impact Assessment.
