PRF & Riviere Mitant - Building Bridges |
Monday, April 08, 2002 - The Poverty Reduction Fund (PRF) has formed a partnership with the community of Riviere Mitant in Monchy to build a new bridge for vehicular and pedestrian traffic in that community. The Lower Riviere Mitant Bridge Construction Project will serve as the pilot for the PRF’s Community Contracting Programme. The Community Contracting Programme is a strategy that involves the turning over of funds to the beneficiary community and the provision of requisite training for community members for the implementation of the project identified. “For us at the PRF, we have decided that one of the ways in which we are going to implement projects from now on is to give communities a chance to manage the entire process. So they will decide what it is they want, we will help them to cost that and that when it comes to implementing it, they will also be responsible,” said Executive Director of the Poverty Reduction Fund Donovan Williams. According to Williams, the World Bank, which is funding agency for the PRF, is in total agreement with that concept and would like to see the PRF move more quickly in that direction. The World Bank and the Government of Saint Lucia through the Poverty Reduction Fund has contributed EC$176,000.00 to the construction of the Bridge Project while the community has injected $18,185.00. |
